Gawd, I hate that word, but I couldn't think of another way to word it...doh! Maybe "melodic"?

What do I mean?

The Comes a Time from 7-17-76

The Here Comes Sunshine from 2-23-74

Ooooo, I'd be really interested in a pretty version of Playin'...does such a creature exist?

I'm not into the big scary jams just yet, but I am trying to work my way into it :)

But in order to go deep into the scary stuff, I'll need some pretty stuff to balance it out. So, I'd love to hear your recs for the pretty stuff!

Hey all

Have any of you heard 9/19/70 Dark Star>St Stephen> then
in NFA is the most beautiful melodic Dead, with garcia
ripping off Chinacat lead usually play by Weir.

Capt. Obvious over here, but...

Jam from Wharf back into Dark Star is the legedary "Beautiful Jam."

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1977-05-09.sbd.painoman.77462.shnf

Comes a Time, also legendary.

Later that month -- one of my all-time favorite Stellas.

Oh, and one other that leaps to mind...

There's a very laid-back and beautiful bit of jamming that starts about 14 minutes into the Truckin track and continues after a brief flirtation with Weather Report Suite Prelude and then on into Wharf Rat. Exceptional and unique jamming from the '73 spring tour!

I'll throw in the Dark Star from 10/31/71. Not on the archive anymore but it is on Dick's Picks Volume 2, which you need: http://store.dead.net/1970s/dicks-picks-volume-2

Around the 12 or 13 minute mark is probably the greatest version of the "tighten up" jam they ever did. It soars. My dad started crying when he first heard it.

Here's a fairly short (10 min) Playin that I think has some very nice melodic playing by Garcia:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1987-04-04.fob.nak700.rolfe.miller.99167.sbeok.flac16

I was reminded of it because you mentioned "Comes a Time" and PITB->Comes a Time is a somewhat unusual pairing. It shows up a few other places, such as 5/4/77, which is a really amazing Playin' jam sandwich with Comes a Time inside, but more "adventurous" than "pretty".

Damn it! Ok, not trying HTML anymore...I screwed up somewhere. If the link didn't give it away, I also love the Dark Star from 2-18-71.

Try mining Peggy O's. Just trying to find one that's exactly perfect is a fun ride.

Listen to this BIRDSONG from PNE Coliseum.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1973-06-22.sbd.miller.88526.sbeok.flac16

The opening passage is as dream-like as anything they've ever done, and there are some lovely stretches w/in the jam sections as well.
